Jaime Martinez-Urtaza is Reader in Infection and Immunity in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Bath. He is originally from Spain, where he obtained a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Santiago de Compostela. He has held positions at University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in Sweden as Expert of Food and Waterborne Diseases. His work covers different aspects of molecular epidemiology and effects of climate on infectious diseases. His research interests have been mostly focused on the study of food and waterborne diseases and, in particular, the use of advanced genomic tools to investigate the distribution and epidemiology of human pathogens and trace the major routes of dissemination of pathogens and disease. The results of this work has been published in high ranking peer reviewed journals, including Emerging Infectious Disease, Molecular Ecology, Epidemiology, Nature Climate Change, the ISME Journal, Nature Microbiology or New England Journal of Medicine.
